2015年长沙亚锦赛，宫鲁鸣舍弃部分老将，率领年轻的中国男篮连胜9场夺冠，获得了奥运会入场券。但在里约，中国男篮接连败给美国、法国、委内瑞拉、澳大利亚和塞尔维亚，且场均净负对手29.2分，为1996年亚特兰大奥运会以来中国男篮场均净负分最多的一届奥运会。

2016年7月5日，王治郅的退役仪式在北京奥体中心进行。这也是继姚明在2011年7月宣布退役、2015年8月巴特尔宣布退役之后，当初有着“中国移动长城”之称的三大中锋全部退役。

2016年2月27日，勇士客场121-118险胜雷霆。本场比赛，库里投篮24中14，三分16中12，罚球8中6，砍下46分3篮板6助攻2抢断。库里在加时赛最后0.6秒完成一记LOGO超远三分绝杀，惊艳全世界！

2016年4月14日上午，在科比生涯最后一战中，他50投22中得到职业生涯第五高的60分，率领湖人以101-96击败爵士，这也是NBA历史上球星职业生涯告别战的最高分。本场比赛结束后，科比发表了他的退役演讲，以一句“Mamba out!”结尾，正式宣布退役。

7月11日邓肯在社交媒体上低调宣布退役，未来终于是你们的了；9月23日加内特发表一段视频宣布自己退役，江湖从此再无狼王；11月2日雷-阿伦在球星论坛上发表文章宣布正式退役，96黄金一代正式谢幕。3名传奇球星正式退出历史舞台，很多人的青春就此结束了。

15、姚明、奥尼尔、艾弗森入名人堂

4月4日NBA官方正式宣布阿伦-艾弗森、沙奎尔-奥尼尔和姚明入选2016年名人堂。9月10日最终仪式上，三人正式入驻名人堂，并且三人都发表了讲话。
